Wedding Trends 2023
Here’s a quick guide for all you soon to be brides (and of course grooms) to some of the trends happening in 2023.
The 80s are back -
The walk man, Blockbuster video, Nintendo, prime Arnie and Princess Diana. But in the world of weddings the 80s will inspire dress designs. Voluminous skirts and puff sleeves were common design elements at the time (think of princess Diana’s dress) and that influence is seen on the bridal catwalks in the fashion world but could it make its way into your wedding ? We are seeing couples diving back into the idea that bigger is better for wedding planning and no better statement made than with the bridal gown.

Mates of honour or grooms-maids -
There’s no unwritten wedding law stating that your bridesmaids or groomsmen have to be male or female. We live in such a diverse World. We are starting to see more men chosen as “chief bridesmaid” or women as the “best man”. I for one am here for it!!! If anything, it shows the absolute trust you both have in each other so roll with it :)
First look -
This has been a trend for a while in America but it’s starting to make its way to our more traditional isle of Ireland. As your photographer I cannot recommend it more. It gives you, the couple, time to just take in the moment and appreciate how far you have come together. As your photographer it removes the pressure to get portraits after family formals and allows you to just enjoy your cocktail hour with your guests. I vote more first looks in 2023.
Did you make the cut -
Pre covid the average guest list was around 100 now it’s averaging around 70. The best way to keep cost down and be more sustainable, is to have smaller guest lists. More and more couples are opting for smaller intimate ceremonies with just their closest friends and family and spending part of the budget on a big ass party instead!!! At the end of the day, a wedding is a celebration so why not.
Humanist Ceremonies -
This is something we will see through 2023 and beyond. Couples are now choosing to move away from the boundaries of tradition. Opting instead for a humanist ceremony. This article on humanist ceremony by hitched.co.uk is a great guide to what this is and why it’s becoming so popular.
Green with envy -
Sustainability, save the planet or reducing cost? Whatever way you want to look at it people are going green. Couples are now looking at fake flowers over real ones, purchasing their dresses 2nd hand either through online or charity shops etc., cutting back on table pieces to reduce the amount of waste. How will your wedding contribute to this? Is that a route you’ve even considered? Either way sustainability is the word on the edge of every conversation now.
Alternative entertainment -
One big thing I see on all the Facebook groups is ideas for how to keep their gust entertained. You want people to remember your big day, right? It seems couples are now thinking that the most fun wedding is the one to be at. Picking a good DJ will be key to this but it’s important to choose one who can interact and get a crowd going - not just show up with a half decent playlist!
